Alliance Summer 2022 Professional Development
The Alliance for Public Waldorf Education is offering Summer Professional Development designed for the Public Waldorf Community

Week 1: July 11th-15th Theory and Practice

Week One of Professional Development offers a combination of theory and practice for educators working out of the Core Principles of Public Waldorf Education.  Designed for all members of the Public Waldorf community, participants can choose from a variety of offerings, including introductory/orientation sessions for those new to Public Waldorf education (these sessions are prerequisites for all grades teachers new to Public Waldorf who wish to enroll in Week #2). In addition to the orientation sessions, teachers have the opportunity to participate in courses in child development, special education, therapeutic education, DEI, leadership, and mindfulness.  Artistic courses are designed to help develop the teacher’s inner life.  Participants can sign up for the entire week or may select individual courses that meet their professional/inner development needs.

Week 2: July 18th-22nd Early Childhood through 8th Grade

Week two is designed for teachers in schools working out of the core principles of Public Waldorf Education. The schedule reflects a professional development experience to support and prepare teachers for entering the classroom.  Instructors have all been involved with schools working out of the core principles and look forward to forming cohorts specific to each grade/area in the morning course.  The courses in math, literacy, and the arts will form as cohorts combining two grades.  Please expect to participate in all the courses for your grade/area, as the instructors are working together to build up a complete picture.  Our hope is that new friendships will form, new insights and practical skills will be gained and that participants will leave feeling refreshed and enthusiastic to begin teaching their classes.

This course for teachers will show a healthy sequence of forms and the best types of forms to present and teach to the children in the third and fourth grades. We will cover single forms and running forms for both grades. Fourth-grade forms will be of the woven, Celtic variety, and coloring/shading techniques will be offered. Please be prepared for class with a graphite pencil and eraser, a set of colored pencils, pencil sharpener, white paper, and a flat surface for drawing. It is helpful to have large paper for some of the forms.
Tuesday: Practical Handwork with Elizabeth Seward
3rd grade is pivotal in handwork, as in so many other ways. Children learn practical skills, and learn to take raw material – fluffy, formless, sheep’s wool – in their hands and by their own steadfast efforts to transform it into strong yarn – that can even pull their teacher across the room! This, for me, epitomizes Waldorf Education (the effort of will and the transformation, not pulling me across the room!). They may learn to dye wool, are introduced to many natural fibers and fabrics, and may also learn to weave as well as crochet.
4th grade is often a year when the social fabric of the class seems to crumble, factions or cliques appear, and in Main Lesson, fractions are taught, as well as the Götterdämmerung (Norse Myths), when things go horribly wrong. In handwork, students are taught to achieve balance and symmetry in their embroidery work and to harmonize color and form in cross-stitch.
In this session, I will introduce you to the ancient technology of spinning and we will work towards an understanding of form and color as used in cross-stitch work.
Materials Required:
For spinning: Drop spindle or make your own (instructional video), unspun wool
For cross stitch design work: 2 sheets of blank copy paper and block crayons.
Wednesday: Watercolor Painting with Neal Kennerk
Thursday: Chalkboard Drawing with Brian Wolf
Friday: Singing Games and Folk Dancing with Anna Rainville
