Alliance Summer 2022 Professional Development
The Alliance for Public Waldorf Education is offering Summer Professional Development designed for the Public Waldorf Community

Week 1: July 11th-15th Theory and Practice

Week One of Professional Development offers a combination of theory and practice for educators working out of the Core Principles of Public Waldorf Education.  Designed for all members of the Public Waldorf community, participants can choose from a variety of offerings, including introductory/orientation sessions for those new to Public Waldorf education (these sessions are prerequisites for all grades teachers new to Public Waldorf who wish to enroll in Week #2). In addition to the orientation sessions, teachers have the opportunity to participate in courses in child development, special education, therapeutic education, DEI, leadership, and mindfulness.  Artistic courses are designed to help develop the teacher’s inner life.  Participants can sign up for the entire week or may select individual courses that meet their professional/inner development needs.

Week 2: July 18th-22nd Early Childhood through 8th Grade

Week two is designed for teachers in schools working out of the core principles of Public Waldorf Education. The schedule reflects a professional development experience to support and prepare teachers for entering the classroom.  Instructors have all been involved with schools working out of the core principles and look forward to forming cohorts specific to each grade/area in the morning course.  The courses in math, literacy, and the arts will form as cohorts combining two grades.  Please expect to participate in all the courses for your grade/area, as the instructors are working together to build up a complete picture.  Our hope is that new friendships will form, new insights and practical skills will be gained and that participants will leave feeling refreshed and enthusiastic to begin teaching their classes.

Hello! My name in Kimberly Telfer-Radzat and I am a 20 year Waldorf class and remedial teacher with passions in math, equity and equality in the classroom. I am finishing my PhD in education in Educational Policy and Social Context at UC Irvine, studying the ways in which executive function development might be positively supported by many of the pedagogical practices used in Waldorf classrooms. The growing charter school movement makes the study of these topics much more acceptable to the wider audience that the study of private schools. Don't be surprised if I contact your school to participate in a future study!
I found Waldorf education through my own children and began my training as a remedial teacher with The Extra Lesson through Rudolf Steiner College. I was asked to take a 1st grade class at the Waldorf School of Orange County in a desperate teacher search year and graduated that 8th grade class in 2015. During my sabbatical year, I continued to wonder about the questions I had developed as a class teacher, watching my students grow from 1st through 8th grade.I was contacted by a group who were petitioning to open a new Waldorf Charter School in Huntington Beach and at that point applied to the PhD program at UCI. I have been a lead teacher ever since the school's opening in 2019 - during the 100 year anniversary of the opening of the 1st Waldorf School AND during the 1st pandemic lockdown in March. It has been a wild ride! During that time I had an article published by DIOPress in the book Corona Chroniclesnecessary narratives in uncertain times about the experience of transitioning from a tech-free school to a virtual platform.
I continue to believe strongly in equitable classroom practices that enable ALL learners to thrive in a regular classroom environment and that it is we as teachers who can limit the learning of those who don't fit neatly into the current educational paradigm. Jo Boaler from Stanford is my teacher crush, and I strongly advise anyone with an interest in helping all students love math to visit her website: www.youcubed.org
